It is time to welcome the shortest month of the year, February; however, it is not short of special days. On the 2nd is Groundhog Day, when we find out whether Winter is over; on the 5th is Super Bowl Sunday, when the best football team is crowned; on the 8th (celebrated by us at services on the 10th) is Tu B’Shevat; on the 12th is Mitzvah Day, when we support charities at the Temple; on the 14th is Valentine’s Day, when our love is proclaimed; on the 20th is President’s Day, when we celebrate the birthdays of two of our greatest presidents; and finally, to end the month, on the 29th, we observe Leap Year Day, which is an extra day inserted once every four years to keep the calendar seasonally synchronized. Only in a leap year is the tradition whereby women may make marriage proposals and, if made on Leap Year Day, the man cannot refuse, under severe penalty.
Sixty Empty Nesters will enjoyed our January activity, “Capitol Steps,” at Amaturo Theater. It was a wonderfully entertaining evening. If you enjoy musical comedy productions, you will not want to miss purchasing your tickets for our next show, “Forbidden Hollywood,” on Sunday, March 11, at Parker Playhouse at 5:00PM. We have reserved 50 center orchestra seats in rows H through K. This is a follow-up to the 20-year run of Forbidden Broadway, which still is a very popular show. The cost is $37.50 per person and, by February 8, we must pay for those sold and cancel those unsold. To commit now, please call me at 954-389-8528 and send payments to Art Tenenbaum, 16102 Emerald Estates Dr., #211, Weston, 33331. Make checks payable to Empty Nesters of Temple Dor Dorim. Members are encouraged to bring guests.
Mark your calendar for our Annual Tu B’Shevat Seder on Friday, February 10, at 7:00 PM. Be sure to join Rabbi Lipson, assisted by Cantorial soloist Allison Teisch, the Generations Choir and Chutzpah Band, as they lead us through the Seder, singing, eating and drinking. Elaine Jacobson and Marsha Riefs are chairing this day, which marks the “New Year of the Trees.” In addition, the evening ends with a delicious Oneg dessert selection. This is a perfect occasion to plant a tree in Israel though a donation to the Jewish National Fund (JNF).
Once again, the Temple will sponsor our Annual Mitzvah Day on Sunday, February 12 at 9:00 AM. For Empty Nesters, this is our on-going Mitzvah Project of sending care packages to our Military serving overseas, through the “America’s Moms for Soldiers” organization. Prior to the 12th, please bring your collection of personal grooming items, baby wipes, snacks, etc, to the Temple and place them in our collection bin. Also, please be there on Mitzvah Day, with additional donations, to help pack the boxes for mailing.
Following in March, aside from “Forbidden Hollywood,” we have our Annual Empty Nesters’ Shabbat on Friday, March 30 with services, for the entire congregation, at 7:30 PM. However, this year, together with Touchy, preceding services, we will sponsor a multi-generational Shabbat Dinner at 5:30 PM. The dinner is planned exclusively for Empty Nesters’ members and Touchy families. The proceeds will be donated to Touchy for youth program scholarships. We will be charging $20.00 per person. Alice Holtzman is chairing the event and Marsha Riefs, along with members of the Nesters and Touchy, will serve on the dinner committee.
Looking forward to April, we will have our most significant fund-raising event of the year, which celebrates our Temple’s Anniversary. It will be “The 16th Annual Main Event & Auction,” to be held on Saturday, April 12 with a nautical theme “Come Sail Away.” Royal Caribbean International will be a major sponsor and, in addition to supporting the Temple’s financial aid and scholarship programs, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to Kids In Distress. Member invitations, at a cost of $90 per person, for this fantastic event are now being mailed. Also, you have received forms to participate in our Special Anniversary Ad Journal and Membership Directory. Please help by soliciting ads from local businesses and service providers you use, don’t forget to put in your personal greeting. If you have any questions, call Lauren in the Temple office or me.
Finally, our Annual Closing Dinner on Thursday, May 17, at 6:30 PM, once again, will be at the popular Town Center restaurant, Tarantella. Our Chairs, Bob Baker and Jay Saks, are maintaining the $30 p/p price.
Thank you for your support,
Shalom,
Gary Holtzman
