Empty Nesters

YOUNG AT HEART

Our mission is to provide an environment for social, cultural and religious activities geared to interact, exchange and share experiences, as well as, nurture friendships, common to the maturity of the group’s members and enhance a more meaningful Jewish experience.

The “Empty Nesters” is a mature group of individuals and couples, who are Temple members. Annually, we sponsor the Temple’s Tu B’Shevat Seder, conduct an Empty Nesters’ Shabbat Service and schedule up to three additional club social functions. Additionally, we support Temple and community cultural and fundraising activities.

NEWS FROM EMPTY NESTERS

Gary Y. Holtzman – 954-389-8528 – algari@bellsouth.net

Dear Nesters and Friends,

As Chanukah ends, so does 2019 in two more days and it is time to welcome a new decade beginning with 2020. Again, Alice and I wish our many friends a very happy and healthy New Year.

Below are reminders for our upcoming Empty Nesters events in January, February and March. I implore you to check the dates and commit early, as it really helps the event planning committees.

PASTA BAR AND MOVIE: THURSDAY, JANUARY 9, 6:00 PM

We will be at the Temple in the Social Hall to enjoy a delicious Italian repast, with a special pasta bar prepared by Elaine Jacobson. The meal will also include salad, pizza and dessert. Our film is the 1947 Oscar winning movie, Gentleman’s AgreementThis film was selected for preservation by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.” Gregory Peck, Dorothy McGuire and John Garfield star in this movie about a reporter pretending to be Jewish in order to cover a story on anti-Semitism, and personally discovering the true depths of bigotry and hatred. The price is only $10 per person. We are now taking your reservations on line at dordorim.org/movie.

TDD MITZVAH DAY: SUNDAY, JANUARY 12, 9:00 AM

The Empty Nesters join with Temple’s Early Childhood Center as once again we will collect, sort and package items for the Broward Partnership (Homeless Assistance Center) on TDD Mitzvah Day. Remember, the items are for all ages and genders: toiletries, hygiene, personal grooming, diapers and wipes, along with non-perishable food and snacks. Hopefully you have already started your accumulation for donations, or shop at the Dollar Store and/or Publix, etc. Our collection box will be in the Temple Office vestibule after the New Year, or bring it on Mitzvah Day and help pack.

SHOWTIME FROM BORSCHT TO BROADWAY:  SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 2:00 PM

We have Purchased tickets at Sunrise Lakes Phase 4 Theater for this fast paced show featuring world renowned entertainer Avi Hoffman and Maestro Aaron Kuda leading the Klezmer Company Jazz Orchestra, as they present a musical journey through the origins of the Yiddish theater on Second Avenue and the Borscht Belt to the treasures of Broadway. This is Super Bowl Sunday, however our show is at 2:00 pm and the game is in the evening. The ticket price is $22 per person. Please RSVP to algarI@bellsouth.net, or call the Temple office to reserve your seat today. You can enjoy an optional brunch on the way o the theater (BuyYourOwnBrunch) prior to the show at 11:30 am, at Lester’s Diner.

EMPTY NESTERS TU B’SHEVAT SEDER: FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 7:30 PM

This celebration, New Year for Trees, is the Empty Nesters, very  popular signature event. Once again, our perennial Chairperson since 2004, Elaine Jacobson, and her committee are planning another wonderful event. Please join us as our congregation celebrates the Shabbat and Seder service, led by Rabbi David Novak, assisted by Jordan Wilensky, along with members of our Generation Choir. You will not want to miss this beautiful and delicious (wine, fruit, nuts) service, followed with a special Oneg. For those wishing to purchase a tree in Israel, please contact JNF at 561-447-9733.

SHOWTIME, CAPITOL STEPS:  SUNDAY, MARCH 15, 8:00 PM

We have also purchased tickets at Sunrise Lakes Phase 4 Theater for the performance of Capitol Steps, which began 37 years ago as a group of Senate staffers who satirized the very people and places that employed them. This group annually tours with updated, current material and is back putting the MOCK in Democracy with their “both sides of the aisle” hilarious skits and song parodies. This is a great year to satirize politics. Tickets are $20 per person. Please RSVP to algarI@bellsouth.net, or call the Temple office to reserve your seat today. You can enjoy an optional dinner (BYOD) prior to the show at 5:30 pm, at Lester’s Diner.
