Dear Friends.

"A turkey sat on a backyard fence...." so begins a classic (at least for me) Thanksgiving Day song that I leaned in elementary school.  That, along with the story of the Pilgrims, Plymouth Rock and sweet potatoes with mini marshmallows on top were the only important features of the holiday that I remember from childhood.  Oh yes, who would get the turkey neck.

A number of decades have passed since my childhood and Thanksgiving Day has become more important to me than ever before.  Not only should we the story of the first Thanksgiving at our table, but also our families' story of how, when, where and why they also came to America.

America has been good to us and we to it; it is important for our children and each other to hear our story. Not only will it deepen our appreciation of America, but will also strengthen our connection to one another as we realize that all of us are here because known and unknown ancestors sailed, flew, drove or walked to arrive in America.  They came for religious, political or economic reasons, their dreams may not have been identical, but they knew that the opportunity to find it, was on these shores.

God willing, a cease-fire will be taking hold between Hamas and Israel.  May it mark, not only the cessation of fighting, but the beginning of talking.  And if that occurs, then truly, with America supporting a true peace, we all will have that much more for which to be thankful these holiday season.

Shoshi joins me, Ilana, Todd, Zana, Aliza and Seth in wishing all of you and your a wonderful and meaningful Thanksgiving Day celebration.

Erev Shabbat services this Friday, in the Ennis Family Library-Chapel at 6:30 pm.
